Copper Cookware (Cataplana):
The cataplana is a container for cooking foods typical of the Algarve. It also uses the same term for the cooked food in that container.
It's sort of pot metal formed by two hollows that fit with the aid of a hinged and often with two side locks. Originally from copper or brass, the cataplana is currently manufactured in aluminum, but with a bath of copper to give a distinctive appearance. There cataplanas of various sizes, according to the amount of food that is intended to prepare.
Usually the food - usually seafood, but sometimes with different forms of pork, with onion, various spices and sometimes potatoes or other vegetables - are placed inside the raw cataplana and left to cook with it closed in light bland.
It can be assumed that the cataplana is equivalent to the old cast iron cookware.
